February CFCS Meeting.
The February meeting was actually two presentations!
The first was about SMART COMPUTING. This talk wasn’t just
about the magazine, which is impressive enough within itself, but
also about availability of data on the web on the magazine’s
web site. The magazine was presented as a wealth of information
in all aspects of the PC world.
The magazine layout is even different
as pointed out by our presenter and President Ed Mitchell. Rather
than bits and pieces of articles being all over and “continued” on
other pages, SMART COMPUTING actually continues articles in subsequent
pages! Reviews of software, hardware, and computer applications
are covered in depth in this magazine. Possibly more impressive
is the array of data available on the SMART COMPUTING web site.
Here are located not only the articles that are included in the
magazine past and present, but data, opinions, reviews and comparisons
that are NOT in the magazine.
It was pointed out that the staff
reviews and compares much more data and units than could possibly
be published in the magazine, so they are included on the web site.
Of course the magazine and web capability are members only.
The second presentation again, by Ed Mitchell was from Intel and
had to do with the present and future capabilities of computers,
and interfaced equipment. A big turn in technology is currently
allowing us to connect our entertainment systems through our computer
and home networks to provide a vast capability for internet update
and local control! No need any longer to cut a disk to play your
home movies, just connect via your local network and your digital
movies are played directly to your TV set. The use of MP3, video
and other audio and media forms will be revolutionized by the new
applied technology.
The presentation expanded on the future of
these applications to every day life and the systems now being
developed. It was an excellent presentation!
